The Job Information Center (JIC) has a comprehensive collection designed for people who are exploring careers and seeking employment. Its specialized resources include reference and circulating materials in the following areas:

Career Exploration --Books and other materials that describe hundreds of careers and occupations, including their employment outlook, and salary ranges, as well as education, training, and licensing requirements. Internet resources at the library include the New York State Department of Labor's Career Zone which details hundreds of occupations including which ones are in demand and videos of many careers.

Job Search Process, Resumes, and Cover Letters -- Resources that cover the job search process including:

  • General Guides and Organizers
  • Resumes & Cover Letters
  • Interview preparation
  • Networking
  • Salary Negotiation
  • Career guidance for specific populations, including African Americans, bilingual Latinos, women, ex-offenders, people with disabilities, ex-military personnel, older workers and teens. 

Educational Planning -- Resources for researching education and training opportunities beyond high school, including:

  • Catalogs of local area colleges
  • College Source Online, a nationwide database of college and university catalogs
  • Indexes to college majors
  • Directories of trade and vocational schools, graduate programs, distance learning, and other non-traditional courses
  • Financial aid materials relating to scholarships, grants, and loans
  • Brochures from Monroe County School Districts, BOCES, and other organizations offering non-credit adult education courses

Test Preparation -- Study guides for many types of tests, including:

  • General Aptitude Tests
  • Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT)
  • Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB)
  • Graduate and vocational school admission tests
  • Professional licensing examinations
  • Civil Service examinations

Job Searching - JIC resources for local job searching include the following:

  • Local Information
    Democrat and Chronicle Sunday help wanted ads, the Monroe County DHS Weekly Employment Bulletin, and monthly schedules of career development and computer literacy workshops at Rochester Works are posted. Announcements of local apprenticeship opportunities are available. Job postings from some local colleges and non-profit organizations are also available. JIC does not receive job posting from for-profit companies.  
     
  • Online Job Searching
    Websites of local employment resources along with national employment resources are linked on the library's home page under the Job Information button. Internet computers are available throughout the library. 
     
  • Civil Service
    Announcements of upcoming civil service examinations for the City of Rochester, Monroe County and New York State are posted. Study guides are available for loan.
     
  • Local Job Search Publications
    Copies of the following free publications are available to the public:

    Monroe County's Job Search Companion
     
  • National Job Search Publications
    JIC subcribes to:

    International Career Employment Weekly 

In addition to the materials described above, computers are available throughout the Central Library for 90-minute-per-day access to:
